Lightspeed Classroom Management in Five Easy Steps

We have several exciting technology updates this year which are designed to strengthen teaching and learning in each of your classes, one of which is Lightspeed Classroom Management, a screen monitoring tool for all teachers of students in grades K-12.

Product Overview:

Lightspeed Classroom Management™ [promo video] gives teachers control over their digital classrooms and real-time visibility of student activity. Teachers can monitor student screens, close distracting tabs, block up to 100 URLs, and enable screen sharing for a collaborative, interactive classroom—whether it’s in-person or at a distance. With Lightspeed Classroom Management, educators can spend more time educating, and less time managing(Lightspeed Systems, n.d.)

Getting Started in Five Easy Steps:

  1. Web address: https://classroom.relay.school
  2. Click on the option to log in with Google
  3. Select your classes individually to set the days they meet (M-F) and input class meeting times
  4. Your student rosters will populate automatically from *PowerSchool (Note: students will notneed to “join” Lightspeed–they are automatically enrolled)
  5. Start monitoring student screens either through open tab list view or screen view–your choice

*Note: Students will not roster until the first day of class on August 11th; however, you are able to change your class settings and make a variety of adjustments within Lightspeed before then.

Troubleshooting Student Screens:

Tip 1: Please ensure your class schedules (meeting days / times) are set up correctly for each class.

Tip 2: There are four states a student can be in.

  1. Online: on a webpage, at the desktop, or on a new tab

Online: On Webpage

Troubleshooting:

Sharing Your Screen

When sharing your screen with students, it may be useful to create the following “Lists” in your “Web Rules” to ensure students stay on task and don’t close your newly shared resource:

Step 1: Go to Web Rules

Step 2: In “Allow Lists,” click “Create List“

Step 3: Create a “Classroom Apps” list: Include all “allowed” sites your students may access during class

Step 4: Create an “Allow Screen Sharing” list and copy/paste the list of URLs below into that window:

Step 5: When you’re ready to share your screen with students, uncheck the “Classroom Apps” list so students are only able to have your specific resource open.

Step 6: Share your screen using the Class Controls

Step 7: When finished sharing and/or when students are free to continue to access your allowed Classroom Apps, check the box again.

Pushing a Link

Similarly, to ensure students cannot access other tabs/websites once you've pushed a link to them, you will also need to temporarily uncheck the allowed “Classroom Apps” web rule and then add the link you wish to push to students to the “Allow Custom URLs” section while keeping the “Allow Screen Sharing” box checked. When finished, check the “Classroom Apps” box once more.

When Absent From Class

  • To ensure web rules are in place during an absence, teachers must open Lightspeed to monitor. If that is not an option, the OPS network filtering will still be in effect.

When Adding Students Manually:

  • When there is a need to add students manually to Lightspeed, once you send the invitation to them and they accept, the teacher will then need to go into Lightspeed’s settings and click the “green check mark” before being able to see that student’s screen.
